State adds another $400,000 to the Flood Appeal: Premier

Mackay: Premier Anna Bligh today announced a further $400,000 for the disaster relief appeal to help victims of flooding in regional Queensland.

The Premier was in a flood-ravaged Mackay inspecting damage from this week's bucketing.

"This is a very serious disaster situation," said the Premier, flanked by Federal Human Services Minister Senator Joe Ludwig.

"There are hundreds of homes with literally millions of dollars damage. That said, it is clear that the community of Mackay is really pulling together. There is a real community spirit here, but there is a long way to go, she said.

"I have today approved a further $400,000 for the Premier’s 2008 Flood Relief Appeal. The appeal already has about $500,000 and it is now heading towards $1 million," said Ms Bligh

The Premier was also accompanied by local MP Primary Industries Minister Tim Mulherin, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson.

They, and Mackay Mayor Julie Boyd, attended a lunchtime regional disaster briefing at Mackay Police Headquarters. Earlier they inspected inundation damage at Mackay Base Hospital and flash-flood damage in several Mackay suburbs.

Ms Bligh said that members of the public can make donations to the Relief Appeal through any branch of the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ or National Australia Bank.

“Ensuring that the money reaches those most in need the Red Cross is distributing the funds on the Government’s behalf. Further information is available from the Red Cross on 1800 733 111.

Applications for support will be assessed by local assessment teams and approved by a Distribution Committee (comprising representatives from the Red Cross and other community service organizations).

“No donation is too small. A lot of regional Queenslanders are doing it tough and we as a community can help get them back on their feet,” she said.

Meanwhile personal hardship assistance to individuals and families, and assistance for non-profit organisations is administered by the Department of Communities. The Department of Communities can be contacted on 1800 440 074.

Concessional loans for rural producers and small businesses should contact QRAA (Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority) on 1800 623 946.

To apply for freight subsidies, producers should contact the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) on 13 25 23 or their local DPI&F inspector.
