The Honourable Warren Pitt

Upgrade to improve traffic flow on Nicklin Way

Work has begun in earnest on a road upgrade project that will significantly improve peak-hour traffic flow and safety on the Sunshine Coast’s Nicklin Way.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said Main Roads’ construction arm, RoadTek, had started widening a northbound section of Nicklin Way between Kawana Island Boulevard and Lutana Street as part of a $2 million contract.

He said the upgrade, which started last week, would provide three northbound lanes for a 1.4km stretch of one of the Sunshine Coast's busiest roads.

"By widening this section of Nicklin Way, capacity during peak hours will be significantly improved," Mr Pitt said.

"This stretch of road already carries about 40,000 vehicles a day, of which some 2000 are commercial in nature.

"The extra lane will also improve safety at the Kawana Island Boulevard intersection by removing the need for drivers turning left into Nicklin Way to merge with existing traffic."

Early works towards the upgrade were undertaken before Christmas and the project is expected to be completed by mid-2008.

Mr Pitt also announced a $1 million contract for RoadTek to replace guardrails on state-controlled roads in Caboolture, Maroochy, Noosa and Cooloola shires.

Member for Glass House Carolyn Male said the new guardrails would be installed at bridges across some of the most important roads on the Sunshine Coast.

"The Queensland Government has a rigorous assessment program that identifies necessary maintenance works before they become safety concerns,” she said.

"This guardrail replacement project is a result of that assessment program and will help ensure the safety of the driving public."

New guardrails will be installed on the following roads:
• Kilcoy–Beerwah Road
• Pumicestone Road
• Steve Irwin Way
• Nambour Connection Road
• Nambour–Bli Bli Road
• Obi Obi Road
• David Low Way
• Sunshine Motorway
• Cooroy Connection Road
• Gympie Connection Road
• Wide Bay Highway
• Yabba Creek Road.

Ms Male said the replacement work was expected to be finished in June and drivers were urged to obey roadwork signage and exercise care when driving through work sites.
