Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh

On 29 March, it’s lights out Brisbane!

Premier Anna Bligh announced today the Queensland Government’s support of Earth Hour 2008, and urged businesses, households and residents to take part in the visible stand against climate change.

Ms Bligh said at 8pm on Saturday night 29 March, Queensland Government buildings in the Brisbane CBD would all-but disappear from the skyline when lights are turned off for an hour.

“Earth Hour is a global initiative of WWF-Australia designed to raise awareness about the effects of energy consumption on climate change,” Ms Bligh said.

“We will join other Australian and international cities in the US, Europe, the South Pacific and the Middle East in highlighting the simple steps we can all take to collectively reduce our carbon emissions – from turning off lights when we’re not using them and switching appliances off at the wall.

“This symbolic initiative is a global opportunity to raise awareness about how our behaviour affects the environment we live in and I am pleased to support it.

“Education and awareness is the key to doing things better and Earth Hour 2008 will be a reminder to all of us that saving energy will go a long way to saving our planet,” she said.

Ms Bligh said Queenslanders around the State could also get involved – as a household, as neighbours or as a community.
