The Honourable Rod Welford
GOMA WELCOMES MORE THAN 100,000 TO ANDY WARHOL
More than 100,000 visitors have experienced the exclusive Andy Warhol exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Arts Minister Rod Welford announced today.
Mr Welford said since opening on 7 December last year, the exhibition has attracted visitors from all over Queensland, Australia and the world.
“By close of business on Tuesday 12 February a total of 112,412 visitors had walked through GoMA’s doors to experience the Andy Warhol exhibition,” Mr Welford said.
“A daily average of 1,703 visitors have enjoyed this remarkable exhibition at the redeveloped Cultural Centre.
“Warhol has been an extraordinary success, reaching the 100,000 visitor mark after only 60 days of its 114-day season.
“This is a wonderful achievement for GoMA and a salute to the father of Pop Art. The extraordinary depth and diversity of Warhol’s work and the dedication of GoMA’s staff have created a truly wonderful and exciting exhibition for everyone.”
Mr Welford said the exhibition had been a winner for cultural tourism, with almost half the exhibition’s visitors from regional Queensland, interstate and overseas, particularly New Zealand.
“Andy Warhol is also proving extremely popular with students. There have been bookings from over 580 school groups, which will see more than 22,000 students visit the exhibition in coming weeks,” he said.
“The children’s component of the exhibition – The Silver Factory: Andy Warhol for Kids – has been a huge success and it was a popular activity with families over the summer holidays.
“More than 71,000 visitors enjoyed Warhol-inspired activities during the Andy Warhol Summer Festival, which was held from 18-28 January across the Gallery’s two sites, the Queensland Art Gallery and GoMA.
“The festival also presented interactive activities at 24 venues across regional Queensland, attracting around 2500 visitors.”
Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the public response to Andy Warhol was overwhelming.
“It confirms that Queenslanders have an appetite for high quality arts and cultural experiences,” Mr Ellwood said.
