Cairns to host Queensland Parliament

Cairns has been chosen as only the third city in our State’s history to host a meeting of the Queensland Parliament, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

"Cairns is the hub for one of our most beautiful and vibrant regions and it is fitting that we bring all 89 Members and the State Parliament to the Far North,” the Premier said.

"Whilst the proceedings of State Parliament are now broadcast over the internet and can be watched by all Queenslanders, regional sittings held outside of Brisbane mean that many thousands of people, especially school children, are able to witness the proceedings in person.

"All of the local members of parliament have put a very strong case to me to declare Cairns the third city outside of Brisbane to host Parliament and I'm sure the people of Cairns and Far North Queensland will welcome this opportunity.

“The Parliament will be sitting from 28-30 October 2008 at the Cairns Convention Centre.
“This will be the third regional sitting of the Queensland Parliament, following on from the successful sitting in Central Queensland at Rockhampton in October 2005 and in North Queensland at Townsville in September 2002,” she said.

“Regional sittings are part of the Government’s continuing commitment to ensuring all Queenslanders have the opportunity to be part of Queensland’s decision making and democratic processes.

“I know the local community will make the most of this unique opportunity,” Ms Bligh said.
