Possible closures at schools and TAFEs tomorrow
Education authorities in north Queensland, central Queensland and Wide Bay are monitoring flood waters to determine whether TAFEs and schools will be open to staff and students tomorrow (Wednesday 13 February).
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said parents would be advised via radio broadcasts in the morning if any schools or TAFEs would be closed.
“We will keeping a close eye on rising flood waters in north Queensland, central Queensland and Wide Bay areas overnight and will take advice from local disaster management groups about possible closures,” Mr Welford said.
“Schools in the Burdekin region, both state and Catholic, were closed today, as was the Burdekin campus of the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE.
“Staff and students at the Bowen campus of the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE were unable to leave the Bowen campus for a short time today until the tide fell, and the campus was closed for the remainder of the day.
“The Maryborough and Hervey Bay campuses of Wide Bay TAFE were also closed to students due to severe weather and flooding.
Mr Welford said the highest priority was the safety of students, parents and staff.
“We will continue to monitor our schools and TAFEs to ensure they are accessible to staff and students,” he said.
North Queensland region
All schools in the Burdekin region expected to be open tomorrow, however, Giru State School and Gumlu State School will be monitored overnight.
Mackay Whitsunday region
All schools are expected to be open, however, Mistake Creek State School will be monitored.
Fitzroy Central West Queensland
Nagoorin State School being monitored and access to Builyan State School may be limited.
Wide Bay Burnett
No schools closed, however, some families may have difficulties accessing Agnes Water State School, Wartburg State School, Winfield State School, Tin Can Bay State School, Rainbow Beach State School and Park State School.
