Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Safety guides released for housing construction industry
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel today released a series of guides to improve workplace safety in the housing construction industry.
Mr Mickel said Workplace Health and Safety Queensland had collaborated with New South Wales and Victoria to ensure the industry guides are consistent with workplace safety regulations in all three states.
“The guidance material focuses on a range of safety issues in housing construction including supervision, site security, site access and amenities.
“A consistent approach to workplace health and safety requirements for the building and construction industry in multiple jurisdictions will help improve safety and reduce the risk of injury.
“The development of common guidance material is a key strategy in harmonising key areas of workplace safety and workers compensation arrangements.”
Mr Mickel said the three states have been working together to streamline workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety while upholding safety standards.
“Our aim is to make it easier for employers who conduct business across multiple jurisdictions by reducing costs and streamlining processes.
“The states will continue to work together to achieve further improvements to deliver real benefits for everyone in the workplace.”
The guides, which are consistent with the National Standard for Construction Work and were developed in consultation with key industry groups, are:
• Site security and public access onto housing construction sites
• What is adequate site supervision?
• Amenities on housing sites.
