Burdekin schools closed due to floods

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford announced that all schools in the Burdekin area will be closed today (Tuesday 12 February).

Mr Welford said schools from Majors Creek and Giru through to Home Hill and on to Gumlu would be closed due to flood risks.

“We have been advised by the Burdekin Disaster Management group that they would like us to close all schools, both Catholic and state, in the Burdekin area,” Mr Welford said.

“Parents have been advised via radio broadcasts that the schools will not be open today and that parents should keep there children at home.

“We have made this decision with the safety and wellbeing of students, parents and staff in mind.

“It is anticipated that there will be rises in the rivers around 12pm today and that there is potential for flood waters to affect the Home Hill area.

“The Townsville District Office has been in contact with the affected schools and is monitoring them for any damage caused by flood waters.

“Our highest priority is the safety of students, parents and staff and we will continue to liaise with the Burdekin Disaster Management group regarding the operation of our schools. “

Mr Welford said the following schools were closed today: Ayr East State School, Home Hill State High School, Home Hill State School, Gumlu State School, Osborne State School, Burdekin Catholic High School, St Colmans School, St Francis School, Burdekin Special School, Kalamia State School, Jarvisfield State School, Giru State School, Ayr State High School, Ayr State School, Airville State School, Maidavale State School, Brandon State School, Clare State School, Millaroo State School, and Majors Creek State School.

Authorities are monitoring schools in other districts as heavy rains continue over much of north Queensland.
