Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

New Rural Fire station at Mt Kilcoy

A new Rural Fire Brigade Station for Mt Kilcoy-Sandy Creek region, north-west of Brisbane, was officially opened by Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts at the weekend.

Mr Roberts said the Brigade has been an integral part of the community for almost four decades, but now had its own station from which to conduct operations.

“The Mt Kilcoy-Sandy Creek Rural Fire Brigade was established in 1970, but all meetings and equipment were held at the First Officer’s house,” Mr Roberts said..

“Now they have their own facility which they can call home.

“It will be a big boost in attracting new membership and maintaining its important place in the local community.”

Stage one of the new station was been completed at the cost of $56,000, while plans for stage two (which include a kitchen and further amenities) are currently being prepared.

Mr Roberts said financial assistance was received via the Jupiter’s Casino Benefit Fund ($47,599), the Rural Fire Brigades Association of Australia ($5,000), the Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs ($1,363) and the Kilcoy Shire Council ($10,395).

“It’s great to see so many organisations coming together for the benefit of the community,” Mr Roberts said.

“The Mt Kilcoy-Sandy Creek Rural Fire Brigade have already attended 49 incidents since July 1, up on a total of 38 incidents last financial year.

“The permanent station will only enhance their ability to provide a timely and professional response when needed.”

Mr Roberts praised the efforts of Rural Fire volunteers across the state.

“Queensland boasts 36,000 Rural Fire Brigade members, making up the bulk of our Emergency Services volunteer contingent.

“However, we’re always on the lookout for new members, and we’ve just started a recruitment campaign.
