PREMIER WELCOMES CAUTIOUS APPROACH TO WATER

Premier Anna Bligh has welcomed the Queensland Water Commission’s cautious and responsible approach to easing water restrictions as South-East Queensland’s dam levels continue to rise.

Ms Bligh, who was briefed by QWC Chair Elizabeth Nosworthy yesterday, said it was clear the Commission had made scientifically-based decisions in the interest of water security.
“I congratulate the Queensland Water Commission on the very thorough analysis it has done to navigate the way out of drought restrictions,” Ms Bligh said.

“It is clear the 40% trigger is a very measured and cautious one – we have learned too much about the need to use water responsibly to go back and I welcome their careful approach.

“South-East Queenslanders have demonstrated their commitment to using water more wisely and as a result, set a new benchmark in responsible use.

“With that in mind, I am confident the trial of the wet afternoon will be a successful one and people will be responsible with this opportunity.

“No one wants to see us facing dry dams ever again and I thank the Water Commission for its work in ensuring we all use this precious resource more wisely.”
