AWARD WINNERS CAPTURE A DIVERSE QUEENSLAND

Premier Anna Bligh today announced the winners of the annual Premier’s Multicultural Photographic Awards, who shared in more than $20,000 in cash and prizes.

Now in its fourth year, Ms Bligh said the awards highlighted Queensland’s vibrant multicultural outlook.

“My congratulations go to all of the entrants, especially our winners who have truly captured the essence of Queensland’s cultural diversity,” Ms Bligh said.

“These awards provide people with a great opportunity to capture what multiculturalism means to them in a fun and creative way, and the quality of entries continues to improve each year.”

A total of 245 images were submitted for the competition by both budding photographers and professionals, capturing the relevant theme of New Beginnings.

West End’s Vinna Nugroho took out the top honor, winning more than $12,000 for her image titled New Reflection in the Open category.

Highgate Hill’s David Cartier received a “highly commended” for Wedding, Freedom and New Life in Australia which includes photographic equipment to the value of $2,000.

Tewana Bickey, of North Rockhampton. won the Primary School Student Award for Shared Stories, Shared Life and Toowoomba’s Jenna Holmes, who won the People’s Choice Award in 2006, was once again an award winner with A Colourful Life in the Secondary School Student category.

Ria Tierney, of Auchenflower, received the first Minister‘s Award for Digital Image Manipulation for Halfway Home, winning $2000 worth of photographic equipment.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the People’s Choice Award winner had been chosen after 3371 votes were cast online by the public, with Jade Mellor the clear winner with her entry Father and Son.

“The Premier’s Multicultural Photographic Awards are a great way to celebrate multiculturalism in Queensland,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

A larger-than-life exhibition of the short-listed images is on display at South Bank’s Arbour until Monday 22 February,” she said.
