Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Recovery efforts continue in Emerald and Gem Feilds

Community recovery teams are continuing to help people in the Emerald and Gemfields area recover from the floods.

“We’re doing everything possible to help these great communities get back on their feet,” Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said.

“The Department of Communities is coordinating Government and non-government community recovery efforts right across the State.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the department was also continuing to operate Community Recovery Centres in Emerald and Sapphire for a couple more weeks as needed, providing support and information about available assistance.

“Together with recovery partners Red Cross and Lifeline, Communities’ outreach and centre-based teams have helped many of Queenslanders hardest hit by the floods – which includes in excess of 1500 households,” she said.

“We’ve received more than 1700 applications for financial assistance and provided in excess of $740,000 in emergency assistance payments.”

The Community Recovery Centres based at the Emerald Town Hall and the HACC Multi-Purpose Centre in Sapphire will continue to operate daily from 9am-5pm until Friday, February 8.

From this Saturday, February 9, until Friday, 15 February, the Sapphire centre will open from 9am-12noon and the Emerald centre from 2¬-6pm.

“I encourage people to visit these centres or call the Disaster Recovery Hotline to access assistance as soon they can.”
