Chinese New Year shines spotlight on cultural diversity
Vibrant Chinese communities right across Queensland are about to paint our towns and suburbs red – literally – as celebrations get underway to welcome in the Year of the Rat.
Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Chinese New Year was a wonderful time to reflect on the rich cultural diversity that makes up the Smart State today.
“The Year of the Rat is the first in the cycle of 12 animal signs and people born under its influence are noted for their charm and hard work to achieve their goals,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“It’s considered a very lucky year so it is a great time to start a new venture or try something new,” she said.
“Over recent weeks, many Queenslanders of Chinese origin have been busy preparing to enjoy the festivities, ensuring their homes are sparkling clean by sweeping away bad luck and opening the way for good luck in the year ahead.
“The fact so many Queenslanders who don’t have Chinese heritage are also getting ready to enthusiastically take part in Chinese New Year celebrations is living proof we truly are a proud multicultural State.
“Chinese New Year is a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together, reflect on our past and celebrate our shared future together.”
