Premier Bligh recognises Qld's super seniors

Premier Anna Bligh publicly recognised 15 of Queensland’s “super seniors” today for their outstanding contribution to the Smart State.

Donating decades of time and a wealth of expertise to charities and other worthy causes, the recipients of the annual Premier’s Award for Queensland Seniors were honoured at a special ceremony at Parliament House.

“I am delighted to pay tribute to all of the winners who have made such a valuable contribution to their local communities and to Queensland,” Ms Bligh said.

“Through sheer hard work and dedication they have helped improve the quality of life for many people and these awards are about giving something back by publicly celebrating their remarkable achievement.

“At a time when there’s growing pressure on individuals, families and communities, these Queenslanders are an inspiration to us and they embody the true meaning of community spirit.”

Ms Bligh said the awards recognised and celebrated the outstanding contributions that Queenslanders over 50 make to their communities.

“It’s important to recognise the depth and diversity of achievements seniors make right around Queensland.

"Many of this year's award recipients have worked voluntarily for more than 40 years through community organisations and individually, to make their communities better places to live.

“I congratulate each and every one of them and thank them for their exceptional contribution to this great State,” she said.

Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Premier's Award recipients – while only a fraction of Queensland’s many wonderful senior volunteers – had shared their exceptional skills and wisdom with their communities.

"The Premier's Awards for Queensland Seniors continues to attract a large number of nominations, with more than 220 received in this round.

“All the nominees have made a significant contribution to Queensland and are positive role models for Queenslanders young and old,” she said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the six-member selection committee commented on the high standard of nominations, saying it was difficult to select the winners.
