The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Community groups share in $200,000 funding pool

Community groups in the Bowen Basin received a boost today when Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson announced the successful recipients of Powerlink Queensland’s $200,000 Bowen Basin Community Benefits Program.

Minister Wilson said thirteen community groups would share in more than $200,000 to undertake community projects.

“The projects range from building shade structures at a local school to installing a bore, pump and pipeline for a permanent water supply at a community centre,” Mr Wilson said.

“Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program is about giving something back to communities that are close to new transmission line projects.

“There are a number of new transmission line projects in the Bowen Basin including new powerlines between Broadsound and Nebo, Nebo and the Pioneer Valley, Nebo and Queensland Rail’s Mindi Substation, and Lilyvale and Blackwater.

Electricity demand in the region is forecast to rise by around three per cent a year and that reflects the strong growth in the region, particularly in the coal mining sector.

“The new powerlines in the Bowen Basin region are being built to help support and underpin the region’s economy,” he said.

Member for Fitzroy, Jim Pearce welcomed the funding.

“It’s heartening to see a big organisation giving something back to the community.  All of these projects are worthwhile community initiatives.  It’s a windfall for local communities,” Mr Pearce said.

Powerlink Chief Executive Gordon Jardine said the Community Benefits Program worked in partnership with local groups to deliver benefits and important facilities and services to communities near transmission lines.

“The program is separate, and in addition to the compensation paid to property owners directly affected by the transmission line project,” Mr Jardine said.
