Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Statewide TV series to showcase skilled Queenslanders
The regional WIN Television network is set to showcase the stories of some very motivated Queenslanders who are heading for brighter futures after taking part in Queensland State Government funded skilling projects.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the forthcoming weeks will bring a 12-part series that highlights the inspiring outcomes for participants on Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative projects.
“These are the tales of ordinary men and women who have seized opportunities to overcome barriers and increase their skills and employment prospects,” Mr Mickel said.
“Skilling Queenslanders for Work offers disadvantaged jobseekers a mix of accredited training, paid and unpaid work placements and customised assistance and support.
“It gives participants skills that meet the needs of local employers who are struggling to find staff.
“While unemployment is at a low 3.7 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work and thousands of employers who need skilled workers.
“The projects documented throughout the series, and hundreds of others like them, are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.
“The initiative is a win for participants, a win for communities and a win for local skill starved businesses.
“We hope the series will encourage other Queenslanders to follow in the footsteps of these local stars to move toward brighter and more prosperous futures,” he said.
Mr Mickel launched the series at the WIN Television Studios in Rockhampton today.
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
