Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Today’s exploration brings on tomorrow’s jobs

Thirty-two companies have successfully applied to explore for petroleum and coal seam gas in new acreages released around the state.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said the companies planned to spend more than $500 million exploring the Adavale and Georgina basins, and the Bowen-Surat and Cooper-Eromanga basins.

“There’s a lot of untapped potential for new discoveries in those areas. Today’s exploration will yield tomorrow’s jobs,” Mr Wilson said.

“We’ve opened up more than 110,000 square kilometres in areas that are relatively unexplored.

“The Adavale Basin in Central Queensland and the Georgina basin in the far west are seen as frontier areas with exciting potential for new, commercial discoveries.

“The Bowen-Surat and Cooper-Eromanga basins are well-known to explorers and have good prospects for further development,” he said.

Mr Wilson said all the companies were actively seeking environmental approvals and working to meet legislative requirements in order for work to start on the ground.

“Queensland is rich in resources and its potential for petroleum and coal seam gas has sparked international interest.

“The challenge for the successful companies is to explore these areas and discover their true potential.

“We want to spark a mini exploration rush and produce results that will create jobs and build on our strong economic growth.

“Coal seam gas is a lower emission source of energy. It’s a win for the environment and a win for the economy,” Mr Wilson said.
