Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Queensland businesses stamp their mark in Russian market
A Toowoomba company, Wagners Global Services, and Mackay's Anderson Group of Companies are stamping their mark in the Russian marketplace with the help of Trade Queensland.
Wagners has secured another multi-million dollar deal with Russia, supplying special sand to construct gas and oil pipelines in the far eastern Sakhalin region.
And mining industry supplier Anderson Group has confirmed its first sale to Russia of two underground coal loaders valued at $1.4 million.
Trade Minister John Mickel congratulated both regional Queensland companies on their sales and declared them international success stories.
“This is great news and well-deserved wins for Wagners and the Anderson Group, who have built internationally competitive enterprises from regional, family-owned businesses," he said.
Wagners Global Services (WGS) is part of the Wagner group of companies that has grown from a family-owned business established in 1989 to an organisation employing more than 850 people worldwide.
WGS specialises in supplying ready mixed concrete, pre-cast concrete, quarries, transport, materials handling and processing, and project consulting in remote and challenging sites --- including Equatorial Guinea in West Africa and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.
Mr Mickel said Wagners' $9 million deal was the fourth consecutive contract in the Sakhalin region, one of the coldest in the world.
“WGS has worked hard to reach this position and has now cemented its reputation in Russia as a supplier of choice,” he said.
Anderson's was established as a family business in1994, and has now grown to a staff of 300 servicing Queensland and New South Wales underground coalmines from Wollongong, Newcastle and Mackay. The Anderson Group designs, manufacture, maintains and repairs underground diesel machinery used by Australia's multi-million dollar coal industry .
Mr Mickel said the two group's success proved the value of the Queensland Government's work in pursuing trade and investment opportunities in Russia over the past three years.
“Russia has emerged as a significant market for Queensland exporters particularly in mining technology, information and communication technology business solutions, engineering services and agribusiness,” he said.
“To help businesses break into this valuable market, Trade Queensland has supported a large number of companies through government-led trade missions and business matching activities across Russia.
“All these activities combined with their own hard work, have begun to reap rewards for Wagners, Andersons and a range of other Queensland businesses.
“In fact, Wagners joined a trade mission to Sakhalin in 2003 and was part of a large Queensland contingent which took part in the Australia Week promotion in Moscow in June 2006.”
Mr Mickel said other recent Queensland success stories included:
• Brisbane-based JK Tech Pty Ltd securing a contract from SGC Vostok to supply a JK Drop Weight Tester. JK Tech is the technology transfer company for the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and the other Centres of the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at the University of Queensland. The JK Drop Weight Tester is an industry standard for use in characterising the breakage properties of ore to be processed at grinding mills.
• Australian Innovative Systems securing its first export deal to Russia after participating in the Russia Australia Business Forum in Brisbane in September 2007. The Tingalpa-based company will supply swimming pool saltwater chlorinator equipment to Vseslav, a Moscow-based group of companies that imports construction materials and engineering systems including residential swimming pools.
“These success stories highlight the inroads Queensland is making into Russia,” Mr Mickel said.
“The Queensland Government is committed to strengthening this already robust commercial relationship and increasing opportunities for Queensland businesses in the region.”
