Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
A State Government project will assist 18 early school leavers from around Goondiwindi and Inglewood to build up the skills they need to find jobs.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will provide $107,710 to Goondiwindi Training and Technology to deliver the Get Set for Work project.
“This program aims to assist young people aged between 15 and 17 who have left school before completing Year 12 or are at risk of being excluded from mainstream education,” Mr Mickel said.
“Goondiwindi Training and Technology are offering a variety of accredited and non-accredited training to make these young people more employable and to keep them engaged with the community.
“While unemployment is at a low 3.7 per cent in Queensland some young people looking for their first start in the workforce are having a harder time.
“The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative assists disadvantaged jobseekers and underemployed people through projects like this one to build up their skills and knowledge so they can find stable employment.”
Goondiwindi Training and Technology Centre Manager Esme Cairns said the first group of nine people will join the project in February and the second intake will start in July.
“Each intake will run five days a week for 18 weeks and in that time they will complete a lot of different activities and training,” Ms Cairns said.
“To get into the workforce these young people need to improve their self-confidence and motivation as well as develop generic workplace skills like communication and teamwork.
“On top of that, thanks to support from the Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE, participants can pursue a recognised qualification like the Certificate I in Rural Studies which will help them gain some of the skills needed to pursue a career of their choice.”
In 2008 over 2000 young Queenslanders who leave school early or are ‘at risk’ of not completing Year 12 will benefit from the $10.6 million statewide Get Set for Work program.
In the most recent survey of Get Set for Work participants conducted three months after leaving the program more than 75 per cent were in work or study.
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
