The Honourable John Mickel

Positive IMPACT for Bundaberg’s early school leavers

Twenty early school leavers in Bundaberg will receive assistance to help them join the workforce thanks to IMPACT Make Your Mark and the State Government.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will provide $112,030 to IMPACT to deliver the Get Set for Work project.

“This project can assist any young person aged between 15 and 17 who has left school before completing Year 12 or are at risk of being excluded from mainstream education to find a viable career,” Mr Mickel said.

“IMPACT is offering a variety of activities and training to build up participants’ skills and confidence to help them find work.

“The training covers practical skills that participants can use everyday in the workplace or in the community and will help them make up for the shortcomings in their life experience or work experience.

“For early school leavers the Get Set for Work program provides a pathway to learn more about the workplace so they can make a smooth transition when they find the right job.”

IMPACT Chief Executive Officer Dorothy Cox said the project can address basic needs such as literacy and numeracy as well as offer a variety of accredited training in industries like hospitality, landscaping or retail.

“Each young person who joins the course has different needs and goals so it is important that the project is flexible enough to assist them to take the next step towards a career path they want to follow,” Ms Cox said.

“Get Set for Work will be a big help for someone who wants a job but might not be sure what type of work they want to do and it can also help others who want to complete some vocational training or return to school.’

“This project is for any early school leaver who is having trouble finding or staying in the workforce. It doesn’t matter if they qualify for unemployment benefits or not.”

In 2008 over 2000 young Queenslanders who leave school early or are at risk of not completing Year 12 will benefit from the $10.6 million statewide Get Set for Work program.

In the most recent survey of Get Set for Work participants conducted three months after leaving the program more than 75 per cent were in work or study.

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
