BLIGH CONGRATULATES QLDER PLAYING LEAD ROLE IN BRITISH PARENTING

Premier Anna Bligh has congratulated Queenslander of the Year Professor Matt Sanders on his Triple P positive parenting program being chosen to play a lead role in helping the British become better parents.

“And Queensland can claim to be home of the most advanced evidenced-based parenting and early childhood intervention programs in the world,” Ms Bligh said.

“As founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, Professor Sanders has helped three million children and their families in 16 countries around the world.

“The system was first adopted by the Queensland Government in 1998 and has been used to provide free support to hundreds of thousands of Queensland families.

“It now means Queensland research is a global leader when it comes to successful and informed parenting,” Ms Bligh said.

“I take my hat off and congratulate Prof Sanders and Triple P for their achievements and recognition of their great work by the international community,” she said.

“I am not surprised. This benchmark parenting program was developed over 30 years by Queenslanders.”

The Positive Parenting Program is a system of parenting and family support for parents of children from birth to adolescents.

Professor Sanders said he is very excited that the British Government is committing £31 million over three years towards the extension of parenting programs for high risk families in the United Kingdom.

Brisbane based Triple P is used in the Pathfinder and Family Intervention Projects in the United Kingdom and its reputation and proven achievements helped persuade the British Government to extend the program.

Prof Sanders said he never imagined the success it would have overseas as he always focused on helping Australian parents.

“The British Government is really driven to support and assist parents in the United Kingdom,” Prof Sanders said.

“Triple P leads the way in parenting programs and it says a lot about Queenslanders that we take our parenting skills to the rest of the world,” he said.

“Our program gives hope to those families who deal with difficult and unruly children.

“It provides information to parents where before there was a vacuum.

“My vision is a society with happy, healthy, well-adjusted children and adolescents with the skills and confidence they need to do well in life.”

Prof Sanders is based at the University of Queensland and would like to see an International Centre of Excellence for Parenting Research established in Queensland.

“Triple P has the reputation as the world’s best practice in parenting and I would like to see this reputation maintained by Queensland-based research,” Prof Sanders said.

The Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is aimed at parents with children from all backgrounds including disabilities, chronic illness and cultural diversity.
