Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh
GOLD COAST TO HOST FIRST COMMUNITY CABINET FOR 2008
The Gold Coast will play host to the first Community Cabinet for 2008, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.
Ms Bligh said the Cabinet meeting would coincide with the official opening of Skilled Park.
“Skilled Park is a massive $160 million investment by our Government in one of the fastest growing and most popular regions in Australia,” Ms Bligh said.
“On Sunday February 17 we will open this wonderful new facility in time for kick of the 2008 NRL season.
“The opening event – People’s Day - will give members of the public the opportunity to come in and experience the Skilled Park atmosphere, watch the Titans first ever training run at the ground, get a glimpse of the Titans' change rooms and sit in the best seats in the house.
“Entry will be free and we expect thousands of Gold residents to come along and make the most of this unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at our newest venue.”
Ms Bligh said as part of the celebrations a Community Cabinet luncheon will also be held at the ground with local business, community, welfare and sporting organisations to be invited.
She said later in the afternoon the Community Cabinet forum will be held at the School Hall, William Duncan State School, 114-136 Alexander Drive, Nerang.
“This is our 109th Community Cabinet meeting since 1998,” Ms Bligh said.
“The Gold Coast has hosted more Community Cabinets than any other region in the State – recognising its importance as a hub for growth in our State.
“Everyone is welcome and I would encourage Coast residents to come along and meet our Cabinet and have a chat.
Sport Minister, Judy Spence, said tickets for the Queensland Government’s People’s Day at Skilled Park were now available.
"This day is about giving every Queenslander the keys to Skilled Park for a day," Ms Spence said.
“There will be a great range of entertainment and activities for all the family, and show bags full of freebies for the kids.
“The People’s Day also gives stadium operators the opportunity to put the venue through its paces prior to the Titans trial match on 1 March and provide fans with a chance to familiarise themselves with the venue ahead of match days.”
Ms Spence said this government is delivering a world-class venue and has no doubt both the players and fans will be very happy to call Skilled Park home.
"When we open the doors to the public on February 17, Queensland will be presented with a first-class venue, set to hold some of the greatest NRL matches of the season,” Ms Spence said.
Patrons attending all events at Skilled Park are encouraged to catch public transport to the venue.
"We are establishing a first-rate transport hub adjacent to the stadium. Trains and buses will travel to and from the venue on event days, with park and ride facilities to be located close to the stadium."
"This will be an event not to be missed and football fans should get their tickets to this event to travel free with TransLink."
Ms Spence said an advertising campaign would begin this weekend to educate the public about catching public transport to Skilled Park.
