Tarong Energy has entered the mining stakes as the new owner of Meandu Mine near its power stations in southern Queensland, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

Minister Wilson said the move followed a decision in September last year to purchase the Meandu and the nearby Kunioon coal reserve, as a long-term fuel source for its two power stations. Mining contractor Thiess was appointed to operate the Meandu mine.

“This is the start of a multi-million dollar project to power one of Queensland’s biggest electricity generators,” Mr Wilson said.

“It’s got the potential to create hundreds of jobs in the region and deliver a reliable and secure power supply for Queenslanders well into the future.

“It’s a real shot in the arm for the people of the South Burnett who have been severely affected by the drought,” Mr Wilson said.

Tarong Energy Chair Graham Carpenter said that by taking over ownership of the mine, the corporation would be able to maintain coal supplies to its power stations until the nearby Kunioon mine is operational around 2012.

“In Thiess, we have a highly experienced mining contractor to operate the mine on behalf of Tarong Energy. They are fully committed to a safe work environment at the mine,” Mr Carpenter said.

“Thiess offered all employees at the mine a position on no less favourable terms than they had with former owners Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA).

“I’d also like to acknowledge RTCA for their contribution to the mine and to the South Burnett over the past 20 years,” Mr Carpenter said.

Tarong Energy plays a crucial role as a power provider. It is one of Queensland’s biggest generators, supplying around 18% of the state’s electricity needs.
