Community groups share $485,000

Building better family relationships for fathers and encouraging older people to eat more nutritiously are just two community partnership projects to win government funding during 2008.

Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the two projects were shining examples of how community collaboration could improve the lives of Queenslanders through service integration.

Ms Nelson-Carr said fifteen community organisations from across Queensland will share in more than $485,000 in government funding for projects that help build partnerships within the sector and strengthen local services under the Building Links program.

“To be eligible, each organisation had to enter into partnerships with fellow community groups to develop and initiate projects that benefit local people.

“The ‘Young Dad’s Project’ is run by the Youth Housing Project Association and will receive $13,200 to establish a program to work with young Brisbane fathers to improve family relationships and promote positive parenting.

“The project partners are Young Parents Program, Parents YES and North West Accommodation.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said Toowoomba’s East Creek Neighbourhood Centre has been granted $50,000 to help run its ‘Eating with Friends’ program.

“This will target older people who suffer poor nutrition due to social isolation, and will provide opportunities for seniors to develop friendships and to regularly eat healthy meals.

“Toowoomba-based groups The Advocacy Support Centre and Blue Care – Allied Health Services are part of the program partnership.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the programs were just two examples of the wide range of community and disability-focussed activities planned across the state each year.

“Members of our community who need additional support, or may be otherwise disadvantaged, rely on the commitment of these organisations and their people on a daily basis,” she said.

“In turn, the organisations rely on the support of the government to ensure they can provide the services that ultimately meet the needs of members of the community who require assistance.

“The government’s approach is to work closely with disability services and community sectors to strengthen the quality of services available to all Queenslanders.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the program supported organisations to develop ongoing partnerships that helped maximise resources in the community and increased its capacity to meet local needs.

“By working together and sharing resources and services, these organisations become more viable through cost efficiencies, ensuring continuity of high-quality programs,” she said.

Other successful grant applicants included organisations with programs in areas such as domestic violence, Indigenous issues, youth services, drug and alcohol abuse, and homelessness.

“The successful applicants will use the grants for a range of activities, including the development of collaborative service delivery models, sharing resources, providing combined training and developing business case proposals for future activities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

A further Building Links funding round, which is part of the Strengthening Non-Government Organisations strategy, is planned later in 2008–09.
