The Honourable John Mickel

Queensland records strong knowledge-intensive export growth

Preliminary figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have shown the Smart State’s exporters increased the value of their knowledge-intensive exports by $500 million in 2006-07.

Minister for Trade John Mickel said Queensland’s knowledge-intensive exports had reached $4.3 billion in 2006-07 - an increase of 12.7 per cent.

The 2006-07 growth was driven mainly by services exports including education-related travel, computer and information services, royalties and licence fees, and architectural, engineering and other technical services.

“Education-related travel remains Queensland’s largest knowledge-intensive export accounting for 37.4 per cent of ‘smart’ exports, and 29.9 per cent of the total growth in Queensland’s overseas knowledge-intensive exports between 2005-06 and 2006-07.’’

Mr Mickel said the international education sector would continue to play an important role in the Smart State’s exports profile.

“Queensland’s knowledge-intensive exports have experienced 50.6 per cent growth since 2001-02, well ahead of Victoria’s 33.3 per cent increase, NSW’s 37.4 per cent growth, and the national average of 27.1 per cent.

“This growth is a testament to the innovation, creativity and expertise of Queensland export businesses.

“Because of our advanced education systems, R&D infrastructure and long experience in economic development, Queensland is well placed to respond to the demand for high-quality products and services.’’

Mr Mickel said the Government’s export strategy, Driving Export Growth for Queensland 2006-2011, continued to help to diversify Queensland’s export base and assist local businesses to take even more Smart State products and services to the world.
