Bligh welcomes first students to Health Science Academy

More than 180 Year 10 and 11 students joined Queensland’s education revolution this week, becoming foundation students at the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS).

Premier Anna Bligh, who was on the Gold Coast today to officially open the Academy, said the $35 million facility would pave the way for young Queensland careers in health and medicine.

“This Academy will provide bright young Queenslanders with an interest in health sciences an opportunity to fast-track their studies and combine senior schooling with tertiary studies,” Ms Bligh said.

“Students will gain research experience through the academy’s partnership with nearby Griffith University, renowned for its expertise in biomedical, clinical and healthcare research.

“They will have access to facilities like the university’s Institute of Glycomics, and on any day move seamlessly from secondary to tertiary studies, to research, and to clinical facilities,” she said.

Ms Bligh said the foundation students would be given the opportunity to gain a world-recognised pre-university qualification, the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

“Academy graduates will have a passport to many international universities and a pathway to clinical professions including medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, optometry, and careers in public health, education and medical research.

“This is about developing young minds and inspiring them to do great things in their chosen field – right here in Queensland,” she said.

Minister for Education, Training and the Arts Rod Welford, who joined the Premier to open the Academy, said its world-class facilities integrated the latest ICT and building design developments.

“The campus is wireless-enabled, with seven science laboratories, a 500-seat lecture theatre, a multi-media suite and a gym,” Mr Welford said.

“This new academy is part of our Government’s commitment to providing all students with up-to-date facilities to help them reach their potential.”

The Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology at Toowong and the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries at Kelvin Grove opened for students In January 2007.

Students interested in applying for Year 10 at the Queensland Academies in 2009 have until 2 May to register.
