Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
DPI&F initiates database for lost stock and fodder drops
Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said a database to record lost and found livestock and to receive requests for emergency fodder drops in the wake of Queensland’s major floods was now operating.
“Immediate assistance will be provided through the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries by calling the Disaster Recovery Hotline 1800 440 074,’’ Mr Mulherin said
“The Department’s biosecurity officers will also assist with stock identification using the Brands Registrar and National Livestock Identification System.
“I have seen first-hand from aerial sweeps over the region that there are stock losses as a result of major flooding of the Nogoa River and the upper reaches of the Belyando River system.
“But although the aerial surveillance is well underway, it is still too soon to assess how many cattle have died or to gain an appreciation of the significant numbers of surviving cattle that had been washed kilometres downstream.’’
Biosecurity Queensland NLIS officer Doug McNought will be on call to assist stockowners to put the relocation of these cattle into the NLIS database at a time when there are heightened livestock disease and health risks.
DPI&F Business Information Centre is on stand-by to handle requests for fodder drops to flood bound livestock and will welcome donations of hay to assist this process.
Emerald-based senior veterinary officer Dr John Noble and Clermont district extension officer John Chamberlain will take an active role in overseeing the fodder drops across the flood-affected properties.
A truckload of 600 bales of lucerne hay was delivered to the Australian Agricultural College Corporation’s Emerald Campus on Thursday morning as a donation from the DPI&F Biloela Research Station to initiate a fodder drop stockpile.
Emergency Management Queensland is co-ordinating the fodder drop operations.
EMQ officer Wade Harrison (0417 071 267) will coordinate and prioritise fodder drops from Emerald and on-the-ground helicopter tasking will be managed by EMQ’s Wayne Heppel. The EMQ fodder drop coordinator for the Clermont regional operations will be Scott Mahaffey.
