Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Director-General of the Department of Emergency Services

Respected senior public servant Jim McGowan has been appointed Director-General of the Department of Emergency Services.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said Mr McGowan was appointed Acting Director-General of the Department in September last year and Executive Council yesterday formally appointed him to that position.

“Jim McGowan is a widely respected public servant who came to the Department of Emergency Services after serving as Director-General of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General,” Mr Roberts said.

“I am delighted Mr McGowan will remain with the Department of Emergency Services.”

“Under his leadership, the Department is currently playing a critical role helping communities and residents to prepare and respond from the devastating Queensland floods, implementing the Government’s response to the ambulance audit and reviewing the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.”

Mr McGowan has extensive experience in the public sector including as Deputy Director-General of the Department of Industrial Relations and as General Manager of Public Sector Industrial and Employee Relations with the Department of Industrial Relations, after starting his career as a teacher.

He has a Bachelor of Economics, Diploma of Education and is a Commissioner of Declarations.
