Corrective Services Staff honoured with Australia Day Awards

Queensland Corrective Services staff from across the state have been honoured with Australia Day Awards and National Medals during a ceremony a the QCS Academy at Wacol today.

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said the 46 Australia Day Award recipients and 32 National Medal recipients are a fine example of the calibre of men and women working in Queensland Corrective Services.

“This year we are presenting more awards than we have in recent years - a reflection of the excellent work being done by staff throughout Queensland,” Ms Spence said.

“The award recipients have all contributed to the success of corrective services in Queensland – making a difference in a variety of areas, including probation and parole, prison industries, officer training, work camps, intelligence, Office of the Chief Inspector, Media and Communications, and the commissioning of the Brisbane Correctional Centre.

“Their dedication to their work and to helping people is what being an Australian is all about, and it is fitting we recognise their achievements and contributions on Australia Day.”

Among the award recipients was Bill Deichsel, who received an Australia Day Certificate for his work training future Corrective Services officers at the QCS Academy.

“Mr Deichsel is an ex-corrective services officer, with 47 years of service and active involvement in corrective services,” Ms Spence said.

“Now working alongside our new recruits, Mr Deichsel is providing invaluable advice, support and training for the next generation of Corrective Services Officers.”

Ms Spence the Australia Day Awards are an excellent opportunity to say thank you to those people who go above and beyond to improve the lives of others and keep the community safe.

“Corrective Services may not have the profile of other law and order agencies, but the role of these employees in keeping the community safe is no less important.

“The experience and dedication of these officers contributes to the on-going professionalism of Queensland Corrective services and their wealth of knowledge is a great asset to the organisation and the wider community.”

Director-General Frank Rockett said award winners should be proud of their achievements.

“Winners have been nominated by their peers for these Australia Day Awards,” he said.

“Not only should our recipients be proud of their personal achievements, but also of the recognition by their colleagues of their work, attitude and dedication.”
