Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
State government funds literacy training in Brisbane’s North
Forty Northsiders will get a literacy boost in a year-long project to be run by Community Alliance Australia through Queensland Government funding.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the $60,600 Skilling Queenslanders for Work project would offer training at Sandgate, Mitchelton, Strathpine and Fortitude Valley.
“Increased literacy levels can have a great positive impact on people’s quality of life and ability to secure work,” Mr Mickel said.
“The flow on effects of increased self-esteem and greater financial security make projects like this very worthwhile.
“Community Alliance Australia will oversee the project which will also be delivered by local community organisations SANDBAG and Bracken Ridge Action Group and the Brisbane Housing Company.”
Community Alliance Director Patricia Rose said the training will give participants a greater ability to engage actively with their communities.
“Upon commencement, participants’ needs will be assessed and individual learning plans developed,” Ms Rose said.
“As well as basic literacy and numeracy, they will learn oral and written communication skills for personal and workplace application; employability skills; computer literacy and networking skills for social and workplace success.
“The funding will also be used to train 10 volunteer literacy tutors – an essential component of the project.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
