The Honourable Kerry Shine

State's longest-serving motor dealer renews licence

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Kerry Shine today presented the licence renewal certificate to Queensland's oldest and longest-serving licensed motor dealer, 89-year-old Joe David.

Mr Shine gave Mr David his 39th consecutive annual licence renewal certificate at the Joe David House of Used Ford car yard at Woolloongabba, in Brisbane's inner-south.

"It is a tribute to Mr David, both as a person and as a businessman, that he has worked successfully for so many years as a motor dealer," he said.

"I'm sure his colleagues would agree that he represents the very best values and virtues of the industry."

Mr Shine said the licensing of motor vehicle sellers was essential in maintaining the standards in the industry and ensuring that consumers' rights are respected.

"The Office of Fair Trading currently licences about 7400 dealers and sales people in the second hand motor vehicle industry throughout Queensland.

"I urge anyone who is in the market to buy a second-hand motor vehicle to ensure they check the licence details and business name records of sellers with the Office of Fair Trading to ensure they are dealing with reputable dealers," he said.

Mr Shine said he hoped the commemoration of Mr David's success and longevity in the motor vehicle sales industry would inspire other business people throughout Queensland, especially those starting out in their working lives, as to what could be achieved.

Mr Shine also congratulated Mr David's wife of 60 years, Jean.

"The two of you embody the forward-thinking, hard-working decency that typifies Queensland’s business community," he said.
