Early start for Queensland teachers

Almost 37,000 Queensland state school teachers are heading back to school early to prepare for the start of the school year on Tuesday (29 January).

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said teachers were heading back today (Thursday) – ahead of their students – to finalise preparations for a busy year ahead.

“Principals will be inducting new staff, reviewing the school’s 2007 achievements and planning their priorities for the school year ahead,” Mr Welford said.

”Many schools will be getting ready for their first full cohort of Prep and there will be curriculum meetings undertaken to ensure everything is in order for Tuesday.

“Initiatives to be introduced this year include a new focus on physical activity through the Smart Moves program as part of the Year of Physical of Activity for Queensland State Schools.

“Our Year 12 students this year also will be the first to receive the new Queensland Certificate of Education, which includes school-based academic performance as well as workplace, university and community achievements.

Mr Welford said many teachers will be participating in in-depth professional development sessions in a wide range of areas over the next two days.

“Professional development of teachers is one of my key priorities,” Mr Welford said.

“Our Government is investing more than $40 million this financial year to further develop the professional knowledge and skills of all staff.

“This is about giving our teachers the skills and resources to be the most effective teachers they can be and that can only benefit our students.

“Through ongoing professional development, our teaching workforce can keep pace with our fast-changing world and update their knowledge and skills to best support the learning of students in state schools.”
