Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Reform process to strengthen disaster response capability

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt has expressed his disappointment that Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott is using regional flooding in Queensland to score political points.

“We should be mindful that these floods are having a devastating effect on many Queenslanders so now is not the time to take cheap shots about local government reform,” Mr Pitt said.

“Instead, we should be focusing on the excellent response from all sectors of the community at state and local levels – and local government reform will not change this.

“In fact, reform will enable an even stronger emergency response by an entire region rather than a small community and, because of improved financial management, councils will have access to additional resources.

“The reform process has also provided an opportunity for us to review current emergency arrangements and how these can be improved.

“We are currently developing legislation, which will be in place before the March 15 council elections, that will guide the process for local disaster management groups to transition to the new amalgamated councils.

“Helping us through this process is the Department of Emergency Services, and together we will ensure that all aspects of disaster response are planned in detail to ensure that communities, councils and the State Government are fully prepared for any eventuality.

“On top of this, the Queensland and Federal governments will continue to offer financial support to communities during times of crisis.

“In the last six months my department has contributed almost $73 million dollars in Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery funding, which is being used to rebuild roads and infrastructure and help communities get back on their feet.

“I commend the efforts of everyone involved in responding to our current flooding crisis and I am confident this will continue well into the future,” Mr Pitt said.

“These claims from Mr Scott that local communities will suffer during emergencies because of council amalgamations are not only untrue but are also unhelpful.

“It’s very disappointing that Mr Scott should try to gain political mileage and advantage from the difficulties people are experiencing as a result of the floods.”
