Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Deception Bay Community Youth Programs Association Inc are preparing to begin the Get Set for Work project designed to help highly disadvantaged teens transition into continued education, further training or sustained employment.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said the Queensland Government funded Get Set for Work project will take a holistic approach by taking into account significant barriers which hinder progression to a positive future such as substance abuse and mental health issues.

“The project will include life and social skills activities, literacy/numeracy training and developing self-esteem to improve participant employability and build healthy attitudes toward training and employment,” Mr Mickel said.

“Projects like this one give underprivileged Queenslanders the push start they need to take positive steps toward their future goals.”

Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said assistance with basic skills and self-confidence building may be all that is required to empower people to gain employment.

“Through Get Set for Work projects we also ensure a stronger and more stable workforce,” Mr Wells said.

“Although Queensland’s workforce participation rate is above the national rate, it is important to place as many Queenslanders as we can into employment so they can contribute to our growing economy.”

Deception Bay Community Youth Programs Association Coordinator Trish Ferrier said the organisation has developed partnerships with local business and employer groups to assist employment outcomes.

“Our association has recently engaged with the light timber, milling and manufacturing industries to help secure work for participants at the project’s completion,” Ms Ferrier said.

“Members from community and local employer groups will speak with participants about other employment and training options in conjunction with accredited training in vocational areas such as hairdressing, business, automotive and retail to be delivered by Brisbane North TAFE and Shared Hope Training.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and Queensland’s prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
