Date set for roundtable on alcohol management

The Premier, Minister for Communities and Mayors of all 19 Indigenous communities will come together on February 15 to discuss the future of alcohol management.

Acting Communities Minister Rod Welford said the meeting followed calls by the Premier in December for a roundtable to identify how communities could move forward to address alcohol related issues.

“In December the Premier said that changes would be made to the Alcohol Management Plans after reviews of the current plans found that improvements to the health, safety and wellbeing of residents was not occurring quickly enough,” Mr Welford said.

“The government will leave no stone unturned to find ways to provide a better quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in remote communities.”

Mr Welford said the Queensland Government will work productively with the Federal Government to address priority issues such as alcohol management, child safety, education, housing, land and education.

“The round table reflects the priority the Federal and State Governments gave to Indigenous reform at COAG, including an extra $50million for alcohol treatment and rehabilitation.

“It is expected that the February meeting will cover the data from the reviews and will work on the practical actions that need to be addressed.”

The meeting will held in Cairns on February 15.
