$30m Roma–Taroom Road upgrade project progressing well

Work to upgrade the 150km Roma–Taroom Road was well under way, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today during a visit to the district.

Mr Pitt said the $30 million project would revitalise the important road link.

"Taroom, Bungil and Bendemere shire councils are working together with Main Roads’ RoadTek to rehabilitate and upgrade the road," he said.

"This road is a strategic freight route linking the Roma saleyards to the central Queensland coast, and is regularly accessed by traffic. The upgrade will provide a smoother journey for all residents, commercial operators and tourists travelling along the route.”

Mr Pitt said 110km of the road had now been sealed and widened to a minimum of 3.5 metres.

"Work is continuing, with RoadTek about to commence construction on a 20km full width seal between Echo Hills and Kangaroo Creek.

“The project is currently on schedule and additional funding will be sought to complete the full link."

Mr Pitt thanked property owners along the route whose cooperation had made the works easier.

"Some landowners in the district have allowed machinery camps and site offices to be set up on their land, while others have contributed valuable local knowledge and experience,” he said.

The project is due for completion in late 2010.
