Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Gold Coast unemployed aiming for jobs
Mission Australia will assist 65 Gold Coast unemployed people thanks to an $83,900 grant from the Queensland Government.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is funding the 12-month Skilling for Work project.
“These participants will develop the writing and communication skills they need when searching and applying for jobs,” Mr Mickel said.
“Writing a good resume or job application and speaking well in an interview will give participants the skills and confidence to start a new job, ready to do their best and learn as much as they can.
“With unemployment at a low 3.9 per cent and a record high workforce participation rate of 67.4 per cent we need to assist and encourage more people to find work so our economy can continue its strong growth.”
“Through projects like this one the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is assisting people around the state into meaningful employment.”
Mission Australia Services Manager Janet Maher said 20 participants will also complete some accredited training through the project.
“These participants will complete the Certificate III in Business (Medical Administration) which will help them become part of the workforce supporting the Gold Coast’s designated medical precinct,” Ms Maher said.
“The training will be delivered from the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE Coolangatta campus.”
“Skilling for Work can also offer participants short training courses to help them develop the skills needed in certain industries.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
