Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Nerang South upgrade to get underway
Work on the $45 million upgrade of the Nerang South (Nielsens Road) interchange will start next month, marking the first major step in the upgrade of the Pacific Motorway between Nerang and Tugun.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced the awarding of a construction contract to Seymour White Constructions.
The announcement of a starting date for construction has been welcomed by Member for Mudgeeraba Di Reilly.
Mr Pitt said the Nerang South upgrade would include the replacement of two roundabouts with synchronised traffic lights and the widening of the current bridge over the motorway.
“The start of work at Nerang South will be a major milestone in the eventual upgrade of 23km of the M1 from Nerang and Tugun," he said.
“Seymour Whyte will commence construction work next month and Gold Coast drivers can expect to see the benefits of a fully upgraded Nerang South interchange by the middle of next year."
Ms Reilly said the Nerang South upgrade would significantly improve traffic safety and efficiency, both at the interchange and on the M1.
“When the Queensland Government received a federal funding commitment for this section of the M1 last year, we promised to get on with the job – and that's exactly what we're doing,” she said.
“This project is one of key upgrades needed as part of a staged upgrade of the M1 between Nerang and Tugun.
“By completing these works, Main Roads will cater for both current and future population and economic growth on the Gold Coast.”
“The north-bound exit and the Hinkler Drive intersection will be separated to enable free flowing movements."
Ms Reilly said the start of work on the Nerang South upgrade was great news for the people of the Gold Coast.
"The upgraded interchange will provide much-improved travel in a growing area," she said.
“The Nerang South upgrade has become increasingly important with the recent connection of Nielsens Road to Beaudesert-Nerang Road and associated increases in traffic volumes at the interchange.
“A new combined off-ramp connection from the M1 will provide direct access to Spencer Road and Nielsens Road, and longer on-ramps will allow for safer merging with the M1 traffic."
