Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Queensland will welcome even more international tourists from April 2008, following an increase in Singapore Airline flights to Brisbane, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.
Ms Boyle said Singapore Airlines would increase its scheduled services to Brisbane from 14 to 17 per week from the beginning of April.
“This is fantastic news for Queensland, not only for the expected influx of Singaporean and other Asian tourists, but for travellers from further afield such as the UK and Europe who use this busy international hub,” Ms Boyle said.
“Singapore Airlines is one of the most respected and largest travel brands in the world.
“It also has one of the world’s youngest fleets, a network spanning five continents and is the first airline to receive the new large capacity A380 international aircraft.”
The decision of the international aviation heavyweight follows a State Government mission to South East Asia last November to explore new airline opportunities to Queensland.
Ms Boyle, Tourism Queensland Chairman Don Morris and Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes met with eight of Asia’s biggest carriers to identify new opportunities.
During the visit, the Queensland Government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore Airlines to drive visitation to the state through joint marketing activities.
The three-year MOU is designed to complement Tourism Queensland’s and Singapore Airlines’ Queensland tourism promotions.
Under the MOU, Tourism Queensland will work in cooperation with Singapore Airlines on familiarisations with consumer, trade and media agents to positively promote tourism to Queensland.
“We are very excited that Singapore Airlines has made the savvy business decision to increase its scheduled services into Brisbane,” Ms Boyle said.
“International tourism is worth more than $3.6 billion to Queensland every year and, as a Government, we are committed to growing this figure by partnering with world-leading international airlines.
“These additional flights into Brisbane, which will tap into one of the aviation world’s most influential gateways, builds on our vision to increase international yield into Queensland.”
