Freight subsidies to help flood affected primary producers

The Queensland Government is offering freight subsidies to help primary producers recover from recent flooding in the South East.

Joint State-Commonwealth Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) have been activated to help the Beaudesert, Gold Coast, Logan, Clifton, Stanthorpe, Warwick, Cooloola and Boonah areas.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser, who is also Acting Primary Industries Minister and Acting Emergency Services Minister, said the freight subsidies would provide much needed financial assistance to help primary producers transport necessary items to their flood affected properties for the purpose of assisting recovery.

“Eligible producers can apply for up to 50 per cent of their total freight costs,” Mr Fraser said.

“Items for transport may include emergency fodder, building and fencing materials associated with primary production, machinery and equipment, water, and animals purchased for restocking.

“The maximum combined freight subsidy payment per property is $5000 (excluding GST).

“Primary producers in other flood areas of the state, such as those affected by Tropical Cyclone Helen, can also apply for the freight subsidy but they will first need an Individual Disaster Stricken Property Declaration (IDSP).

“Many properties have been affected by the recent heavy rain and subsequent flooding, and we encourage producers to apply for the local assistance now available.”

To apply for freight subsidies or an IDSP, contact your local Biosecurity Inspector or DPI&F on 13 25 23 or www.dpi.qld.gov.au.

The subsidies are in addition to concessional loans available through QRAA for primary producers.

Low interest rate loans are also being offered to primary producers affected by natural disasters to help with carry-on needs, stock replacement and fixing their property assets.

Contact QRAA on Freecall 1800 623 946 or www.qraa.qld.gov.au for information on the loans.

Closing dates: freight subsidy applications for fodder, building and fencing materials, machinery, equipment and restocking must be lodged within six months of the movement date. Applications for the cartage of water are due within two months of the movement date.
