Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Calling for South Sea Islander students: Minister
Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced applications are now open for the 2008 South Sea Islander Scholarship round.
Ms Nelson-Carr said four undergraduate university scholarships are available to the value of $5,000 each year.
“I’m delighted to also announce the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has joined the scholarship program and will offer a scholarship for the first time this year,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“As the first Brisbane-based university to join the program, QUT will give successful scholarship holders even wider opportunities to pursue their careers,” she said.
“Scholarships are now offered at QUT, James Cook University, Central Queensland University and the University of the Sunshine Coast.”
The Minister said 20 scholarships had been provided to Australian South Sea Islander students to date to assist them with their undergraduate studies.
“These scholarships are a fantastic opportunity and I urge students considering uni to apply,” she said.
The South Sea Islanders Scholarship program was initiated by the Queensland Government, with a perpetual fund established in 2001 with $150,000.
“Since then, the fund has received donations and private sector support worth another $160,000.”
Applications close February 22. For information about the scholarships and how to apply, ring 1800 053 739 or go to www.multicultural.qld.gov.au
