Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
New guide to help tourism projects succeed
A step-by-step guide to starting a new tourism business was today launched by Tourism and Regional Development Minister Desley Boyle.
“Tourism is a major industry for Queensland right across the State,” Ms Boyle said.
“The hard facts are that, because of the expanding number of appealing destinations across Queensland, we need to expand the number of domestic and international tourists coming to Queensland every year.
“That means we need new and exciting tourism experiences.
“This 28-page guide is very practical, but nonetheless, very valuable in helping to grow the tourism industry.
“The Tourism Project Feasibility Guide is targeted at local communities, potential investors and tourism operators, with an emphasis on smaller visitor attractions.
“Most tourism businesses are run by small teams and this guide gives step-by-step advice to starting a business in the tourism industry.
“It includes a checklist of key steps to be considered before establishing or investing in a visitor attraction.
“There is advice on project development including feasibility work, financing and project management.
“The new guide also includes case studies of successful tourism infrastructure development projects.
“The guide will also be useful for local governments, state government agency regional directors, investors and developers.”
Case studies of successful tourism ventures contained in the guide include:
• RiverLife adventure and activity operation in Brisbane
• Lagoon at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays
• Outback@Isa underground mine experience and fossil centre at Mount Isa
• Gold Coast Convention Centre
• Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways at Winton
• Cosmos Centre at Charleville
• Kronosaurus Korner Richmond Marine Fossil Museum at Richmond
• Cape York Turtle Rescue Project at Mapoon.
This follows the 1999 release of a Tourism Project Feasibility Guide by the National Centre for Tourism.
