The artist and the phantom to lure Kiwis across the Tasman
Leading cultural icons will be used to lure New Zealanders to Brisbane for sophisticated city breaks this summer, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.
Tourism Queensland’s New Zealand office, in partnership with the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), has launched a marketing campaign aimed at attracting more Kiwis to Brisbane.
Ms Boyle said the campaign was built to springboard off the Andy Warhol Exhibition at GOMA and the Phantom of the Opera performances at QPAC.
“Brisbane is a city in summer celebration mode and I can think of no two better ambassadors for the city than American pop artist Andy Warhol and The Phantom of the Opera,” she said.
“Having Warhol in Brisbane – its only Australian exhibition – is a major coup for the city and it serves to further position the capital as an exciting and mature destination.
“Add to that the perennial favourite – The Phantom of the Opera – and it would be fair to say Southbank and the city will be sizzling this summer.”
New Zealand is Brisbane’s largest international market, increasing by 14 per cent to 170,900 people over the past year.
To coincide with the opening of the Andy Warhol Exhibition, five key New Zealand media travelled to Brisbane, representing publications including the New Zealand Herald; Dominion Post; National Business Review; Art News New Zealand; and NZ Listner, The Press (Christchurch).
A four-month radio campaign to promote stays in Brisbane city will run until March with one of New Zealand’s key stations.
Tourism Queensland’s New Zealand office has partnered with Brisbane Marketing; GOMA; QPAC; Tourism Queensland Events Brisbane; Go Holidays NZ; Qantas Airways; and Mercure Hotel Brisbane for the campaign.
The Warhol exhibition runs until 30 March and Phantom of the Opera is at QPAC from February 6.
