Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Parents of young children starting school this year have been encouraged to apply for birth certificates before it is too late.
Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice John Mickel said birth certificates were needed for all children enrolling in their first year of schooling, including Prep Year, to confirm they were the right age to start school.
“The start of the school year is always a hectic time, organising uniforms, books, transport and after-school care,” Mr Mickel said.
“It is important that parents don’t forget their child’s birth certificate, as it is needed for children beginning their first year of school.
“This time of year is one of the busiest for the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, so I urge all parents to get in as soon as possible to avoid any last minute stress.”
Mr Mickel said application forms were available from any courthouse, through the registry’s website or by phoning the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on 1300 366 430.
“Parents who submit a completed form in person at the registry at 110 George Street Brisbane can usually collect the birth certificate the same day, if their child is registered.
“They can also submit an application at their local courthouse or by mail and should receive the certificate within four weeks.
“Parents will need to provide identifying documents, such as a current driver’s licence or passport. Certified copies of these documents will need to be provided if applying by mail. The cost of a birth certificate is $26.”
