Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
School sports stars from across Queensland will be leading by example in 2008 – the Year of Physical Activity – by participating in regional and state championships.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said there was no better time to encourage all Queensland students to get active.
“Engaging in regular physical activity of at least moderate intensity is one of the major components of a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Welford said.
“Queensland schools have a long tradition of offering a diverse range of opportunities in sport, physical education and activity to children and young people.
“Students competing in the Queensland School Sport championships in 2008 could very well be wearing Australian colours and doing our country proud in the future.
“Throughout the year, students will compete for a right to represent their region and state in a wide range of sports, from surfing to squash and from tennis to triathlon.
“I encourage all students to get involved and lead healthy lifestyles.”
Mr Welford encouraged local communities to support future sporting heroes when the Queensland School Sport championships visited their towns.
State championships are scheduled to be held from February to November this year in the sports and locations listed below.
