The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Queensland to host multicultural extravaganzas for 2008

Queenslanders will be able to tour the world without leaving the state this year, with 80 multicultural festivals and projects to receive $723,000 in Queensland Government funding.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced the successful recipients of the Multicultural Assistance Program, from Ingham’s Australian Italian Festival to Brisbane’s Paniyiri Greek Festival.

“Queenslanders will be able to enjoy a spectacular display of multiculturalism next year with 55 festivals and 25 projects sharing in this funding,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“I am delighted to see such a broad range of Queensland communities represented, with 37 Brisbane-based organisations and 43 regional organisations.

“This includes six major festivals throughout the state, such as the Cultural Fest in Townsville and the Folklines Multicultural Program at the Woodford Folk Festival.”

The Multicultural Assistance Program offers grants to community organisations for projects, festivals and events that promote an understanding of multiculturalism, reduce prejudice and help foster community participation in Queensland.

“This grants program shows the Queensland Government’s support for multiculturalism in a very practical way,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The range of projects and events which will take place next year will encourage community development and give Queenslanders a chance to experience cultures from around the world without having to leave the state.

“I encourage everyone to get involved in the many festivals and projects on offer right around Queensland and help celebrate our wonderful diversity in 2008.”
