Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Stay safe on roads during New Year's weekend

Stick to the speed limit and take regular breaks to avoid being a crash statistic when travelling long distances this New Year’s weekend.

Minister for Transport John Mickel has urged motorists to avoid the Fatal Four - driving tired, speeding, failing to wear seat belts and drink driving.

He said as of December 28 the national road toll for the holiday season had risen to 26, with three deaths recorded in Queensland.

Mr Mickel urged motorists to allow plenty of travelling time and rest breaks to ensure they arrived at their destination safely.

He said 15 minute breaks should be calculated into the trip every two hours to avoid fatigue.

"Drivers should also have a good night's sleep beforehand and avoid alcohol," Mr Mickel said.

"Speed is always an issue during holiday periods as motorists rush to get to their holiday destinations to make the most of their break.

"Make sure all passengers are wearing seatbelts and remember this time of the year is traditionally extremely busy on our roads and these holidays will be no different."

Mr Mickel said drivers should also take advantage of the many driver-reviver sites operating across Queensland these school holidays offering free refreshments and local advice.
