The Honourable Warren Pitt
Cooloola Shire gets $560,000 in disaster funding
Cooloola Shire Council will receive a grant of $561,536 towards the cost of emergency works and post-disaster repairs to fix damage caused by winds and flooding during August this year.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt announced details of the grant today under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program.
“A low-pressure system caused considerable damage to public assets throughout the shire and it was important that the repairs took place as soon as possible,” Mr Pitt said.
“The repair costs were beyond the council’s capabilities, which is why the Queensland and Commonwealth governments have stepped in to help out.”
Mr Pitt said Cooloola Shire Council would receive $561,536 for the repairs, which included the clean-up of silt and debris, the grading of roads and pothole repairs.
“In regional communities, road systems are a community lifeline, so it was important that these repair works took place as quickly as possible so residents could go about their daily lives,” he said.
“Ratepayers should not be left with the repair bill for damaged council assets and emergency works following natural disasters.
“Cooloola Shire Council has also contributed $169,000 towards the repair works.”
The funding has been provided under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
