Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation
The Honourable Andrew McNamara
Harvest changes aid shooters
Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Andrew McNamara has reopened the 2007 eastern grey kangaroo and wallaroo season for a week in the Central Region.
Mr McNamara said the harvest period for eastern grey kangaroos and wallaroos in the Central Region would reopen for one week from 24 December to 31 December 2007.
“Earlier in the year it appeared we would exceed the harvest quotas so the season was closed.
“However, shooting slowed due to wet weather, and it became clear that we could safely re-open the season without exceeding the quotas set by the Commonwealth Government.”
”Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is improving the returns system so harvest tracking will be more accurate.
“Electronic returns have been successfully trialled this year and will be expanded next year.
In addition the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has amended a 2008 macropod harvest notice issued earlier in December which had skin-only harvesting only permitted from May to August 2008.
Mr McNamara has asked that more consultation occur with shooters and dealers before change are implemented.
