Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
New pedestrian bridge over Balonne River
A new $400,000 pedestrian bridge to be built over the Balonne River at Surat will provide safer access for locals and visitors to the popular spot.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said works on the new walkway were expected to start in early February and would bring benefits to the community.
"The new bridge will ensure a safe passageway for pedestrians, separating them from heavy vehicles, including road trains, that often use this route,” Mr Pitt said.
"As well as being a major boost for road safety in the area, this bridge gives walkers even more opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
“It also provides better access for the community using the camping ground, which is popular with both locals and tourists.
“The walkway would also be an added feature to the scenic Riverscape walk that takes in the Balonne River.”
Mr Pitt said the walkway would be affixed to the existing Balonne River Bridge and should be ready for use by mid 2008.
The project is being funded jointly between Main Roads and Warroo Shire Council, which is overseeing the works and contributing $175,000 to the project.
The structure will be designed and built by Dalby-based engineering firm Nortask.
